Back at home

That’s right I’m back at home.

Last Monday was my last day at Algarve, unfortunately my vacations are almost ending. The few days that are left will be spent in my hometown.

Like I’ve planned I went to Albufeira and Alvor, unfortunately I didn’t had time to visit Lagos which is a really nice place to visit, with great beaches, night activities and restaurants.

Although I didn’t planned I’ve also visited Portimão and Armação de Pêra which are also great places.

In these trips I’ve visited two touristic attractions that are worth to talk about.

Finally some time off!

That’s right, today I start my vacations. After a year with lots of work and pressures, these vacations are well deserved.

This year I will be somewhere around Algarve or Allgarve if you prefer, probably in one of these three places, Albufeira, Alvor or Lagos these are my favorite places to spend vacations in Portugal.

They are near the beach and they also have great night activities.

Hope to get some rest because there is almost a new year starting with lots of new as ideas, projects and challenges.

I’ll be back in a couple of days, see you soon!

How to translate administrator menu items in Joomla! 1.5.6?

That’s a question that I’ve been doing to myself in the past two days.

Unfortunately there aren’t much informations about this subject, and from what I’ve read there is a lot of people with the same doubts I had.

Because I haven’t found any documentation on this subject I’ve decided to write the my own tutorial, hope it helps you.

Joomla! 1.5.6 Released

Till a couple of days now I was using Joomla! 1.5.5 but yesterday a new release came out.

This new release is a security release made to solve a high level security issue, then it’s recommended to upgrade immediately.

Some websites are already being owned because of this security flaw, do not risk to get owned too and update your website software as soon as possible.

If you need help read the migration/upgrade instructions in here.

Joomla!

Last week I’ve wrote in here that I was looking for a CMS with a couple of specs. After a lot of reading I’ve decided to bet on Joomla!, although it has a couple of bad reviews it fulfills my needs (I hope).

At the moment I’m running Joomla! 1.5.5 stable.

Yesterday after I installed the software I’ve looked for some tutorials that would guide me through the process of developing a component for this version of Joomla!.

It would be expectable to have some great tutorials in Joomla! Developer Network but to be honest I’ve got to say that the ones that are available are a bit poor, and most of Documentation is written for the older versions.

After a lot of searches I’ve found these tutorials and they are great, at least for helping me out in these first steps.

You know that you’re getting old when…

After reading this post by Edgar Durão I’ve felt a bit nostalgic, because I share the same exact feelings as him. Later I’ve decided to write my own list of Cartoons/TV Series that I used to watch while I was a kid.

Fortunately some of them are now available in DVD in a store near you, that way you can always remember the good old times and think about how old you are getting.

OpenID

If you use a lot of different online services in which you have to identify yourself, supplying an username and password, for sure that you have forgot sometime your login informations for a service that you don’t use often.

And when this happens you start thinking like me, if it wouldn’t be nice if you could have one login for every service that you use, that way you could avoid memory failures.

Now we have OpenID, a free and easy way to use a single digital identity across the internet that solves all your problems.

At the moment OpenID is already being used in a couple of popular websites such as MySpace.

As a developer you can help this project to grow by having support to OpenID in your own projects, you can read about it in here.

Content Management System (CMS)

In the past few days I’ve been reading a lot of reviews about Content Management Systems (CMS) at OpenSourceCMS. Great site by the way, lots of useful informations in there.

Although the site above has a lot of informations it’s really hard to find a CMS that fits your needs, most of the people who use this kind of tools are regular users and their main goal is to install and manage the CMS with success.

That way most of the reviews that I’ve found are written without a developers perspective.

Assembla

Last week I was searching for a service similar to SourceForge.net but without the obligation of your project source code being open/closed.

The truth is that since Tank Legions development I’ve been addicted to SVN and although I can install SVN support on my laptop, I prefer to use it remotely. That way it will work as a backup system too.

With this in mind I found Assembla, to be honest I haven’t tried it yet but from what I’ve seen it has some nice features and it does what I was looking for.

Wanted

For a couple of weeks now I’ve been waiting to watch this movie, finally last night I had the chance to do it.

When I saw the trailer it reminded me of Matrix, with a lot of futuristic tricks.. but now that I’ve seen the movie, I can honestly say that it is a bit surreal and in my opinion a bit exaggerated.

The story is about a frustrated office worker who learns that he is the son of a professional assassin, and that he shares his father’s superhuman killing abilities.
